The fastest Worcester train reaches Paddington in 2h 1m. Times from both city stations, the last train home, and the £4,000 gap between two season tickets.
Worcester has two city-centre stations and a third out at the motorway, and the one you pick changes your journey to London by up to a quarter of an hour. The fastest trains run Worcester Shrub Hill to London Paddington in about 2 hours, direct, on Great Western Railway’s Cotswold Line through Evesham and Oxford.
That two-hour link is a large part of why people move here, and why Worcester house prices have held up while staying below the England average.
The bigger decision is the ticket. There are two completely different ways to commute from Worcester to London, and the annual season tickets for them are £7,440 and £11,440. Which one suits you depends on how much of your life you are willing to spend on a train.
Everything below was checked against National Rail timetable data and operator ticket pages this week. Times are taken from a normal weekday, so always confirm your own train on the day.

Foregate Street is the city-centre station, five minutes’ walk from the High Street and the Cathedral. Shrub Hill is fifteen minutes out but consistently quicker to London, because several London trains start there rather than calling on their way through from Hereford and Great Malvern.
Worcestershire Parkway is not in Worcester at all. It sits by junction 7 of the M5 in Wychavon district, it is run by Great Western Railway rather than West Midlands Railway, and it has 483 parking spaces against Shrub Hill’s 93 and Foregate Street’s none. If you drive to the train, it is the obvious choice.
Where the trains go
London Paddington, direct
This is the route that matters. Great Western Railway runs Cotswold Line services from Hereford and Great Malvern through Worcester, then east through Evesham, Moreton-in-Marsh, Charlbury and Oxford into Paddington. There are no changes and the trains run roughly hourly through the day.
On a standard weekday the first train is the 05:16 from Shrub Hill, into Paddington at 07:24. Fast mid-morning runs from Shrub Hill do the trip in 2 hours 6 or 7 minutes. The 06:43 from Shrub Hill reaches Paddington at 08:44, which is 2 hours 1 minute and the quickest departure observed.
London Euston, via Birmingham
The alternative is to travel north first. Direct West Midlands Railway trains reach Birmingham New Street in 42 to 45 minutes from Foregate Street, and from there London Northwestern Railway runs to London Euston. Allowing for the change, this route takes 2 hours 29 minutes to about 3 hours, so it is slower than going direct.
It exists as a commuting option only because of what it costs, which is the next section.
Getting to the City and the West End
Paddington puts you on the Elizabeth line, which is the practical answer for the City, Canary Wharf and Heathrow. Euston puts you on the Northern and Victoria lines. Neither terminal is included in a plain “London Terminals” season ticket for Tube travel, so if you need the Underground at the other end, price the Travelcard version.
What a season ticket costs
This is where Worcester commuters get caught out. The same journey, Worcester to London, has four different season tickets at four very different prices, because each is restricted to a particular route.

What it means for you. If you commute five days a week, the operator-restricted Euston ticket saves £4,000 a year against the direct Paddington route, at a cost of roughly 45 minutes to an hour extra each way. Over 220 working days that is a lot of hours for the money, which is why most Worcester season-ticket holders take the direct train. But if you go up two or three days a week, or you work on the train, the sums change.
Two warnings before you buy. The cheap ticket is valid only on London Northwestern Railway and West Midlands Railway services, so boarding a Great Western train with it means buying again. And the prices above are for “London Terminals” or Euston only; the Travelcard versions that include Tube travel run £2,292 higher on the restricted ticket and £1,448 higher on the direct one.
Walk-up fares if you are not commuting
For an occasional trip, the direct route to Paddington priced as follows on a standard weekday: Anytime Return £120.60, Off-Peak Return £93.50, Super Off-Peak Return £71.80, with Advance singles from £46.50. Off-peak restrictions kick in after the morning departures, so the same train can cost £50 less at 10:16 than at 08:18.
First and last trains
- First to London: 05:16 from Shrub Hill, into Paddington at 07:24.
- Last direct home to Shrub Hill: 20:52 from Paddington, arriving 23:01.
- Last direct home to Foregate Street: 19:53 from Paddington, arriving 22:02.
That second pair is the detail that catches people. After 19:53 there is no direct train to Foregate Street. The 20:52 runs to Shrub Hill only, and getting on to Foregate Street means a change and an arrival around 23:20. If you are out in London for the evening, the 20:52 to Shrub Hill is your real deadline.
Which station, and how to get there
- Foregate Street has step-free access to all platforms and lifts, staff from 05:20 to 00:15 on weekdays, and no car park at all. It is the station to walk or bus to.
- Shrub Hill has 93 parking spaces including 5 accessible bays, but no lifts, and National Rail rates it step-free in one direction only. Its ticket office closes at 11am from Monday to Thursday.
- Worcestershire Parkway has 483 spaces, 25 of them accessible, lifts, step-free access to all platforms and a ticket office open from 05:00 on weekdays. It is also on the Bristol to Birmingham line, so it reaches Cheltenham, Bristol and the South West directly.
