Two men have potentially serious injuries after a multi-vehicle crash on the M5 southbound near junction 7 this morning. What the ambulance service said.
Three men were taken to hospital after a crash involving several vehicles on the M5 near Worcester this morning, Monday 28 September. Two of them have injuries described as potentially serious.
West Midlands Ambulance Service was called at 7.43am to the southbound carriageway, near junction 7. That is the Worcester South junction, where the A44 and B4084 meet the motorway at Whittington. The service sent two ambulances and a paramedic officer, according to its incident statement.
What the ambulance service said
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said crews “discovered numerous vehicles that had been involved in the incident and four patients”. All four were men.
- Two men were treated for potentially serious injuries and taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital.
- A third man was treated for injuries not believed to be serious and taken to the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch.
- A fourth man was assessed and discharged at the scene.
The statement was issued at 10.40am. It does not say how many vehicles were involved or what caused the crash, and we will not guess at either.
Is the M5 open?
We could not confirm from National Highways’ own information when the southbound carriageway reopened, so we are not going to say that it has. Check the current state of the motorway on National Highways’ travel updates before you set off.
West Mercia Police had not published a statement about the crash on its news page by the time of writing. If the force issues an appeal for witnesses or dashcam footage, we will add it here.
How often this stretch sees injury crashes
Crashes that hurt people are not common on this part of the M5, and serious ones are rarer still. We checked the Department for Transport’s road casualty data for the five years from 2021 to 2025. It lists every police-recorded collision on a public road in which someone was injured.
Within 3 km of the junction 7 roundabout, on either carriageway, it records:
- 15 injury collisions in five years
- 22 people hurt in them
- 4 collisions where the worst injury was serious, and none that were fatal
- 4 collisions involving three or more vehicles, three of them in 2025
The year-by-year count runs 3, 0, 4, 4 and 4. The figures only include crashes that police recorded and where someone was hurt, so damage-only shunts that close a lane for an hour do not appear. This morning’s crash will not show up in the data until the 2026 figures are published.
What it means for you
- If you were travelling south on the M5 this morning and saw what happened, keep any dashcam footage. Watch for an appeal from West Mercia Police, which would give a reference number to quote.
- If you are using junction 7 today, expect the knock-on effect on the A44, the B4084 and the junction 7 roundabout, and check National Highways before you leave.
- For local roads and closures across the city this week, our Worcester roadworks and travel page is updated through the week.
We will update this story if the ambulance service, the police or National Highways publish anything further.
