Worcester's separate November switch-on event has gone. In 2025 the tree lights came on at 7.15pm in Cathedral Square on the Fayre's opening night.

Worcester no longer holds a standalone Christmas lights switch-on in November. The lights now go on during the opening ceremony of the Victorian Christmas Fayre, which in 2026 falls on Thursday 3 December.

That is a real change, and it is the single thing most people searching for this get wrong. Between 2022 and 2024 the city ran a separate free evening in Cathedral Square on a Saturday in late November. In 2025 it did not.

What happened in 2025

Worcester City Council’s festive announcements for 2025 covered the Fayre and nothing else. Its 19 November 2025 release described the four days of the Fayre and then the opening:

The celebrations will begin at 5.30pm in Cornmarket Square with carols and a speech by the Mayor, followed by the switching on of the Christmas tree lights in Cathedral Square at 7.15pm.

The follow-up release on 28 November 2025 repeated the same running order and called it “the traditional opening ceremony”. (Worcester City Council, 28 November 2025)

Neither release mentions a November switch-on evening, a lantern parade or a Cathedral Square stage night, all of which had their own press release in each of the three years before.

The evidence that the separate event has gone

An event missing from one page proves nothing, so here is the full check we ran on 5 September 2026.

The council’s own site search finds no 2025 or 2026 switch-on. Searching worcester.gov.uk for “christmas lights” returns six items. The newest are the two 2024 pieces and the cancellation notice. There is no 2025 equivalent and nothing for 2026.

The city’s official events calendar lists nothing. visitworcester.co.uk is run by the council’s own Tourist Information Centre. Its listings for autumn and winter 2026 carry museum trails, wreath-making workshops and talks, and no lights switch-on.

What the old switch-on used to look like

Worth knowing, because if the city ever brings it back this is the shape it took.

2024. Saturday 23 November, Cathedral Square, 4pm to 6.30pm. Worcester BID’s community lantern parade left The Hive at 4pm and reached Cathedral Square at 4.30pm. BBC Hereford and Worcester hosted. The Mayor, Cllr Mel Allcott, switched the lights on at 6pm with Father Christmas and the cast of Aladdin from the Swan Theatre. College Street on Deansway closed to traffic from 5.30pm to 6.45pm and the Cathedral Square bus stop was suspended. St John’s lights went on afterwards. The entertainment was then cancelled on the day for adverse weather, and the council switched the lights on quietly at some point over that weekend. 2023. Saturday 25 November. The lantern parade ran from The Hive to Cathedral Square led by volunteers and puppeteers, including four six-foot Nutcracker-themed lanterns by local artist Catt Standen funded by Worcester BID. Live music from 4pm to 7pm. The Cathedral island tree was 30 feet, the New Road island tree 36 feet. (Worcester City Council, 10 November 2023)

2022. Saturday 26 November, from 4pm in Cathedral Square, hosted by Radio Wyvern, with the Cinderella panto cast and Mayor Cllr Adrian Gregson. New Road was lit for the first time. (Worcester City Council, 8 November 2022)

Who pays for the lights

The city centre display is a joint effort between Worcester City Council and Worcester BID. In 2022 the council said the BID funds lights in Reindeer Court, Lower Broad Street, New Street, Friar Street, The Hopmarket and The Shambles, while the council covers the rest, and that the scheme moved to low energy LED bulbs.

What to expect in 2026

The Fayre opens on Thursday 3 December, so on last year’s pattern the tree lights go on that evening. Nothing has been confirmed. No 2026 opening time, no running order and no name of whoever switches them on had been published as of 5 September 2026. The council announced the 2025 detail on 19 November, about two weeks before the event, so expect the same window this year.
