Northwick Manor Primary won the Worcester Show Schools' Competition for its garden and allotment, with St Barnabas runner-up. The Mayor presented the awards.

Northwick Manor Primary School has won this year’s Worcester Show Schools’ Competition, which judges the gardens and allotments that city schools grow and look after with their pupils. The Mayor of Worcester, Councillor Tor Pingree, presented the awards, Worcester City Council said on 21 October.

St Barnabas C of E Primary School was named runner-up, and North Worcester Primary Academy was also recognised for its entry.

What the schools won

Northwick Manor’s prize is a class trip to Pershore College, including a guided tour of the college’s garden management facilities. St Barnabas and North Worcester Primary Academy were each given gift vouchers to spend on their gardens or outdoor learning spaces.

Pershore College, the competition’s sponsor, donated all of the prizes. The competition was organised by Chris Thorp, a Worcester Show volunteer.

How it was judged

The competition is held every year and is open to schools across the city. The council said judges looked at more than how good the gardens and allotments were: they also marked entries on their environmental benefits, their educational value and how keen the pupils were throughout the project.

The judges visited each school to see the gardens and allotments in use and hear about what goes on in them. A photo display of the entries was then shown in the Competition Marquee at this year’s Worcester Show.

What the Mayor said

Councillor Pingree said: “Congratulations to all the schools that took part in this year’s Worcester Show Schools Competition.

“The standard of entries was extremely impressive and it was clear to see the pride, creativity and hard work that pupils and staff have put into their gardens and allotments.

“School gardens provide fantastic opportunities for children to learn about nature, sustainability and healthy living, while developing new skills and enjoying time outdoors.

“It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm shown by the pupils and to celebrate the achievements of all those involved. Well done to Northwick Manor Primary School on being named this year’s winner, and to every school that entered for their inspiring efforts.”
